During the summer of 2024, the Financial Wellness Lab had the privilege of hosting Aditya Mugireddy, a Master of Data Analytics student, as a research intern. Aditya worked on multiple projects during his internship, gaining valuable experience and insights that will support him further in his career. In this interview, Aditya shares his experience at the Lab.

What did you learn about the Financial Wellness Lab during your internship?

The Financial Wellness Lab is much more than just research; it’s about inspiring change in Canadians to improve their financial health and overall well-being. The Lab is conducting unique research on how various factors, such as technology and community, influence one’s financial wellness. It’s fascinating to see the Lab’s holistic approach to understanding financial health from multiple dimensions.

How was your experience working with colleagues and your involvement with the Lab’s projects?

My experience at the Lab has been incredibly enjoyable and informative. I’ve gained many valuable skills from my colleagues Jaime Brenes Reyes, Leon Feng, Nathan Phelps, and Dr. Adam Metzler, as well as from my supervisors, Dr. Matt Davison, and Mr. Chuck Grace. I was involved in multiple projects. One of them explored the impact of technology on financial wellness, where I collaborated with Leon, Nathan, and Dr. Metzler on tasks like data cleaning, analysis, and visualization.

I was also part of a project focused on designing an application to measure financial literacy and wellness, which involved working closely with Jaime. There were extensive discussions on how to design the app from various perspectives, which was creatively fulfilling. We also pitched the design to partners and received valuable feedback. Overall, this has been one of the most enriching summers I’ve ever had.

What was the most interesting aspect of the Lab in relation to your area of study?

The most interesting part of the Lab, in relation to my area of study, was the hands-on experience in data analysis and data consulting. I had the opportunity to apply various techniques of data analysis and was also involved in the data consulting process—working directly with clients, understanding their needs, and collaborating on how the project should move forward.
